We’re talking about the Sun Theatre of course, the art deco landmark that is emblematic of the suburb’s modern resurgence.
Opened in 1938, the single-screen 1050-seat cinema came complete with the very modern convenience of a pram room, where babies were given a number and left in their prams (if one woke up and cried the number flashed on the screen). The Sun thrived until the 1960s when television usurped its audiences.
It was resurrected by new owners in 1995 and these days the Sun Theatre – now boasting eight screens and a wine cellar – is the heart of Yarraville’s village, and its iconic neon sign of the rising sun the de facto emblem of postcode 3013. It was only a matter of time before Melbourne’s gentrifying forces discovered the inner-western suburb only six kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD.
